The European Network for Public Services, established at the 2006 4th ESF in Athens, is the result of the mobilizations that have swept Europe in the last few years to defend and promote public services. The recent events (around the referendum, the Bolkestein Directive and the Services Directive) have shown that it is possible, through coordinated actions at the European level and through a constant dialogue with European Members of Parliament, to affect the political debate.
The construction of this European network on public services is deeply rooted in this process.
Its objective is to reinforce the mobilization and the voice of civil society through the exchange of information and of experiences, and the elaboration of common positions and initiatives at the European level. In pursuing this goal, the network is currently approaching new actors like new European countries, and working to define its own strategy in order to be a real force for social change.
There is a common agreement inside the Network on the need to follow the institutional agenda and to set up an alert mechanism. This is already partially realized through the mailing list athens-sp@ras.eu.org (to subscribe to the list, contact: publicservices-network@fse-esf.org).
