The People vs Pipelines and profits: the fight for climate justice [en]
11 December 2003

Climate change is perhaps the most serious global environmental issue we face.

The impacts of climate change will be bourne by those that are the least responsable for the emissions that cause it.

The idea of climate justice means everybody has an equal right to the climate’s resources that the richer countries and people will have to pollute less to allow the poorest to provide for their needs.

To stop dangerous climate change we are going to have to have to do things differnently - make our economy and lives less dependent on fóssil fuels. This means that public and private money needs to go into sources of renewable energy not into damaging fósil fuel projects.

The Baku Tblisi Ceyhan pipeline is a case where human rights and the environment are being threatended to provide yet more oil for the rich countries while leaving many locals without their basic energy needs being met.

Large companies are being given tas payers money to do the wrong things and ioncrease their unacountable power over local people.

There is an active campaign to stop this happening.

Alternative proposals

- The idea of Climate Justice and a global network behind it
- The power of solidarity with the victims of climate injustice
- The Kyoto protocol
- The need for corporate accountability
- No public money for new Oil
- Renewable energy and energy efficiency

Implementation

- Get climate change on the agenda of non environmental orgnisations and bodies
- Win the Baku Tblisi Ceyhan pipeline campaign through public pressure
- Change the policies of internacional financial institutions through public pressure
- Expose corporate practices and fight of rules for business and rights for people
- Put money and effort into renewabel energy and energy efficiency
