During the last Meeting of the WSF International Council, that took place in May 25-27 2011 in Paris, France, discussions around solidarity and strengthening of social movements in the North were very intense, following up the meeting held after the 2011 WSF, in Dakar, Senegal. Concrete proposals sent by Montreal (Canada) and Galicia (Spain) to host the 2013 edition were welcome by the Council, but the Maghreb/Mashrek region seems to be the priority, including with full support of the other candidates. The processes of these both host candidates should not be lost and the Council must be responsible to guarantee that both of them receive support. In Dakar, Brazil, namely the city of Porto Alegre, had also shown interest in hosting the event.
Around one hundred people attended the Paris meeting, among organizations, networks and movements representations, and also observers. Discussions were around seven main points: revolutions in the Maghreb/Mashrek region; Dakar Evaluation report; WSF Resources; Future of the Forum and location of the 2013 WSF; Commissions works (Methodology, Strategies and Communication); new members; Next IC meeting.
According to the report, given the still fragile political situation in the Maghreb/Mashrek region, it is not possible to take the final decision yet. Delegates from the region reported that, although discussions have started, no final decision was taken regarding the location of the event. Even though several locations are being discussed, the two favorites are Tunis and Cairo. Taking the Forum to this region will be very important for the process, its strengthening, for the social movements and activists there – and they should be included in the process. As women are traditionally excluded from main political decisions in the region, bringing feminist organizations from other places to dialog with them would be very enriching and important. The IC will form a group for the 2013 process that will get involved in following the local organizing committee. It should be considered also a meeting of the Council in the first half of 2012 in Mesopotamia.
Beyond that, the 2011/2012 process will be part of the mobilization around the G20 meeting and the mobilizations around the Climate Change Meeting Rio + 20 in 2012.
