Creating our common future! Develop alternatives for a better World!

The European Attac Network is conducting a „European Network Academy for Social Movements“ (ENA) from the 9th to the 14th of August 2011 in Freiburg/Germany. Building upon the great success of the first Europe-wide Attac Summer university in 2008 in Saarbruecken/Germany, we would like to set another important milestone in the success story of Attac in a new period of globalisation and of the movements critical of globalisation.

During the dramatic financial crisis of the last couple of years it has become ever more clear that the present process of globalisation is undemocratic, anti-social and a danger to peace, and it furthermore has the effect of destroying our planet. We have created a number of alternatives to neo-liberal globalisation. However, in spite of the many successes of the movements critical of gloabisation, it has not yet been possible to stem the destructive social and ecological effects of unbridled capitalism. The tremendous redistribution process of wealth from the bottom to the top continues unchecked.

Although substantial parts of our demands regarding the regulation of financial markets have been verbally accepted by governments, we must admit to ourselves that our fight for international social and ecological laws such as a tax on financial transactions, the shutting down of tax havens, fair commercial legislation and European social and tax regulation, has not yet been won. Knowing this we are confronted with new challenges: We must work together more than ever before to make our alternatives visible and have them implemented. Only as an united movement will we be better able to coordinate our actions at an international level. We will only be successful if we can all simultaneously raise our demands in as many countries and places as possible. The „European Network Academy for Social Movements“ is a decisive new step in the history of Attac and social movements. We want to coordinate our actions and campaigns internationally. Our answer to globally organised neo-capitalism is international campaigns as alternatives for society. The ENA is a new occasion for all European Attac members and activists in social movements to meet and together create such alternatives.

In this summeracademy / ENA in August 2011 we do not wish to confine ourselves to the spectrum of the European Attac network or to the limits of our continent. We invite activists from all social movements to actively participate and look forward to the discussions with people from all parts of he world with their ideas and perspectives or a better world.
